"...and may the odds be ever in your favor!"

As The Hunger Games continues to garner fame and readers, I relish in the fact that people are starting to [rightly] love it.  Alongside Harry Potter [Yes, alongside.  Yes, I know what this means] it is one of my favourite book series of all times.  The movie is set to come out next March [AHHH SO SOON!] and, if you have read it, you know that it is absolutely amazing movie material.

To give you a little baby summary, I'll do so now.  The Hunger Games takes place in the future, after humans have done stupid human things and the world has had a whole bunch of earthquakes and such.  America is left in a pitiful state, divided into 12 districts [technically 13] and the Capitol.  The Capitol controls everything and the Districts are each in charge of something important that they provide for the Capitol.  Seafood, District 4.  Electronics, District 3, etc.

Too much exposition?  Perhaps, but I'll continue.  To keep the Districts from rebelling, the Capitol holds this thing called the Hunger Games each year.  The concept is this: two 'tributes' from each district [a boy and a girl] from the ages of 12 to 18, are put in a lottery of sorts.  Whoever's name gets called, they HAVE to participate in the games.  What are the games?  The games are where the teenagers are entered into an arena, and they have to fight to the death until only one tribute is left.

So, each year, 23 tributes don't come home.  Tears all around.  The story begins with our heroine, Katniss Everdeen [Just ignore the name; apparently in the future people have no gift in naming children.], who is 16 and totally awesome.  She lives in District 12, [which is conveniently enough is in the Appalachian mountains, so *HOLLA* we live in District 12] the poorest and most disadvantaged district, with her mom and her younger sister Prim, who is basically her life.  After her dad died in a mining accident, her mom became unresponsive, so she has had to become the sole provider for her family; learning how to illegally hunt and forage, because, food is scarce and death by starvation is often. But, hunting all her life has made her a noob with boys and she has the social skills of a piranha.

SO, when the reaping comes to draw the names for this year's Hunger Games tributes, whose name is called but 12 year old Prim.  And of course, Katniss steps up to the plate and volunteers because she knows she has a better chance of survival, and we don't want Prim to die.  She has a cat named Buttercup.  He literally wins the series.  No, really.  Like, you have-no-idea sort of literally.

If you think, "but how can this be interesting?  Who wants to read this?" I assure you, um, it's awesome.  The pacing is phenomenal, and you will literally finish the book within a good 3 hours because you can not put it down.  It draws you in and does not let you go.  You'll love it like your second child.  You'll want to marry it, forever.  You'll re-read it right after you read it the first time!  And there isn't even any wizards!  And the book is still awesome!  HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?!

Now, read on, for the movie has yet to be cast, so I'm going to take it upon myself to do the process.  So, without further ado, let the casting begin, and may the odds be ever in your favour!

Katniss Everdeen

Official artwork of Katniss
OKAY, so I have two choices.  Okay, so I actually have a thousand choices.  BUT, I've brought it down to these two.  And ironically enough, my two choices are the front runners.  For the record:  Katniss is 16 year old girl, with long dark hair that she wears in a boring plait down her back, has olive skin and grey eyes, and a thin body.  OH, AND SHE DOESN'T SHAVE HER LEGS.*  [ewwww...]  Apparently razors are a luxury in District 12.

*I mean, she has better things to do than shave her legs, but, as someone who is perpetually disturbed by hair, I get the grossies.

Haliee Stienfield
She literally looks just like Katniss.  At first I didn't like her, but the more I look at her the more I think, "that's it, it is."  She's too smiley, and not very fierce looking, but apparently she's awesome in True Grit, and if girl can act, then I have no objections.  A few things though; she's 14, which is rather young.  Not only are there child labor laws to dance with, but if Pettyfer, who is a lovely 21, gets Peeta, then it'll get squicky real quick.  I have a solution to this in my Peeta casting, but I still want Pettyfer more than anything.  Guys, she's so perfect.  Look at the picture; look at her;  look at the picture; look at her.  She can act and she looks just like her.  Make it happen Hollywood.

Jennifer Lawrence
Well, no, I don't necessary like her.  Apparently she can act as well, like Oscar nomination act, and on that matter, I feel confident in her abilities.  And as an actress [HAR], acting is what's most important to me.  BUT, according to a very large rumor from a reliable source, she delivered like none other, and she's already landed the role; they're just working out the little stuff.  So, I'll have to start liking her if that be the case.

The only thing I disagree with, a lot, is her look.  She's very blond and very curvy and she's also 20.  Today I was thinking, "OMG that's so old" but then, I thought, "OMG I'm 20," so now I'm okay with it.  What I'm not okay with is that she's almost too hot for Katniss; too buxom and curvy.  You can't tell here because I picked the most natural photo I could find, but she is very womanly looking.  BUT, after all, this is film, and there is such thing as making her look legit, AND she'd look great across from Pettyfer.

Peeta Mellark

Offical Artwork of Peeta
The leading male, he's described as having blond hair that falls in waves, and blue eyes.  He's also stocky/strong and quite handsome.  He's the baker's son and he is gifted at frosting AND painting.  A gifted speaker, he's extremely nice; and sweet, and thoughtful...and I just want to spend a lot of time with him in some caves.  Or on the beach.  ;)

Alex Pettyfer
MMM.
MMMMMM.
MMMMMMM.

There has never been a man more handsome to walk upon this earth.  Part of me thinks I want him cast so I can oggle him forever.  A lot of people don't want him because he's a "bad actor."  But, I think he's alright; he's not fabulous, but he's not bad.  Peeta isn't quite as conflicted as everyone else [ignoring the 3rd book], and from what I've seen of Pettyfer, he could do it.  He's 21, so he would be great across from Lawrence.  I think he'd look too old across from Stienfield; but every part of my being wants the two of them to have the parts.  Yet again, he looks like the character, he can act decently, so, why ever not Hollywood?

Saying this though, he's said to have an attrocious attitude and be an absolute diva.  Although it is acting, Peeta is a far cry from moody and divalicious.  So, it depends on if the rumors are true, if he has sweetness somewhere and if he can play that.

Josh Hutcherson
Yeah, this is the little guy who was on Firehouse Dog and Bridge to Terabithia.  He's a good 18, so just around perfect, and when I first saw him for the casting, part of me just thought, that wouldn't be so bad.  Make him blond, and I think he looks a lot like Peeta.  And he can act in that whole self-deprecating, adorable way that makes me love Peeta so much.  He's a lot like Peeta and that' something I can appreciate, unlike Mr. Diva above. [it may not be true though!]   I dunno, I want Stienfield and Pettyfer, and maybe this'll happen.  But I want Hutcherson, because he's so like Peeta!  And he'd look marvy next to Haliee.  AH, DECISIONS.

And of course, these two are ironically the big name players in the running.  SO, basically, all I do is win.

But, the way I look at it is like this:
Hailee and Josh
Jennifer and Alex

If you want it to be about the sexy times and eye candy with a side of acting, go for the latter.  If you want to go for legits and cannon power charm, go for the former.  I want the former, naturally, but the latter isn't as bad as I put it, and I CAN'T DECIDE. AH.

Gale Hawthorn
Gale is Katniss' very best friend.  His dad died the same mining accident as Katniss' dad, and they have hunted together since she was 11, helping each other and exchanging knowledge.  Gale is 18, and he has back hair and dark eyes, and is often mistaken for Katniss' cousin.  He helps take good care of her family, and he's gifted with traps.

In general, I'm not all that fond of Gale.  Part of this may be because I thought he was a girl before we met him, because he has the exact same name as my mom.  Then I was like, OH WAIT, HE'S A GUY.  He's also sort of angry and moody, and I don't have the patience for it.  I mean, Katniss is moody enough, and she's the narrator, so we get plenty of the mood, thanks.

Ben Barnes
When I first saw Ben Barnes' photo I thought YES, YES AND YES.  LIKE, YES.  I kid you not, the entire time I read the book I saw Ben Barnes face.  He is Gale.  I haven't seen Prince Caspian but from the trailer, he looks like he has plenty of fire to play Mr. Hawthorn.  And, not to mention, if he was able to give a character to anything from The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe series, I'll give him 8 stars, because the source material is about as useful for developing character as a tiny guitar and a bag of marshmallows is to a dolphin.

See, a tiny guitar and a bag of marshmallows is completely useless to a dolphin!  Like C.S. Lewis' "literature" is useless to an actor trying to develop character.  Because the characters are flat!  Gets it?  I'm done.

Haymitch Abernathy
Haymitch is Katniss' very, very, very drunk mentor, and former victor of the Hunger Games.  He's described as sort of fat and paunchy and he does things like get drunk and sleep with a knife.  He was handsome when he was younger, but now, he's just gross.  But I still think he's hot.  And, in this universe, I would totally marry Haymitch.  Is he an alcoholic jerk?  YES.  Do I care, in this hypothetical, fictional situation?  NO.  He eventually raises geese as a hobby when he isn't drinking.

Robert Downey Jr.
I am so, so glad I have found this picture of Robert Downey Jr. Cause ya'll; that is Haymitch.  Haymitch is snarky and mean, yet loveable, and I have been petitioning for RDJ since I first saw the suggestion.  Like, he has to be it.  As this picture attests, he has that drunk, rugged, "I live in my own feces" thing down pat.

Effie Trinket
Effie is Katniss' escort of sorts who meticulously plans everything.  She has a pink wig, and wears tailored clothes with high heals, and has the fortune to be from the Capitol.  She's very bubbly, and very blind to the injustices of the Hunger Games as she has lived with them as an entertainment source for all of her privileged life.  She's not always bright and she thinks she's always helping out Katniss and Peeta.  OH and she has a ridiculous accent.

Allison Janey
Up until today, I have wanted Elizabeth Banks.  I hated her on Scrubs but something tells me she could play Effie well.  She just looks right or something.  BUT THEN, I read Allison Janey.  You know, Penny's mom in Hairspray.  "Devil child, devil child, devil child."  UM, YES.  The thing about Effie is that she's hilarious; but in that "I'm stupid and I don't know" it sort of way.  Kristen Chenoweth is wanted by everyone but I just cannot see it.   I think my idea of Effie may be different, because I see her around the same age as Haymitch, who is at least 40, and everyone else seems to see her as younger.  Allison Janey, YOU HAVE MY VOTE.  I mean, can't you just see her with a pink wig saying, "It's a big, big day!"?  UM, YES YOU CAN.

Cinna
Cinna is Katniss' stylist.  UM yes they have stylists in the Hunger Games!  Did you think they just dropped them off to kill each other?  NO.  Before they enter the arena, there is this giant preview of the tributes, complete with light-up costumes and interviews.  [I wish they had a talent contest, because I would perform Waterloo.  I'm not even kidding when I say I have the entire thing choreographed in my head.] Cinna is from the Capitol, but he's rebellious, and he makes excellent costumes for Katniss so she will visually pop and therefore win sponsors.  He has brown hair and has a little gold eyeliner.

Cillian Murphey
Okay, so I think Cillian Murphy is very handsome, and although he plays a creeper 80% of the time [but a sexy creeper] I see his awesome presence as very Cinna-like.  Cinna is very much a quiet force and Mr. Murphy just exudes that.  He can say nothing, and you're watching him anyway.  He'd be fabulous.  SO FABULOUS.

And he's Chris' acting hero, so I'll give him the honour of more screen cred.

Mrs. Everdeen
Katniss' mom who oddly never gets a name, suffers from depression, and Katniss just doesn't understand.  She is fair skinned with blond hair and blue eyes, and a healer.  After her husband died, she was left in a catatonic state, leaving Katniss to provide for the family.  So she's fragile, but she's excellent and the things she does.

Laura Linney
I am in love with Laura Linney.  Have you seen The Savages?  Why not; are you beyond seeing amazing things?  If not, go check it out.  Now.  She's an amazing actress, and I love her so very, very much.  She's done several unstable roles, so I know she could play Mrs. Everdeen wonderfully.  I need her to do this.

There are several other parts within The Hunger Games but I am not so picky about them.  I want Prim to be innocent and love animals, and basically be too pure for this evil world.  Rue must be black and a decent actress.  That opens a lot of doors for African-American actresses [do not whitewash her Hollywood, so help me...] and I don't really want Willow Smith, because she isn't the only girl who is black and 12 years old; she's caught a break, let someone else shine.  Madge; be blond?  I don't care. [Don't be Taylor Swift though.  Girl can't act her way out of a bag]  Then there are all the other tributes, such as Thresh, Cato, Glimmer, Clove, Foxface, etc.  And Avox Girl!  But, yet again, just cast em' and I'll be happy.  As long as they look somewhat like people who do things, then so be it.

So, who's left?  OH, THAT'S RIGHT, THE PRESIDENT.

President Snow
I honestly, have no idea whatsoever who President Snow should be.  A guy kills children for entertainment, who can play that?!  OH WAIT, I'LL TELL YOU WHO:

Ralph Fiennes AKA Beast of Sex
You know when I said Alex Pettyfer was the hottest guy to walk the earth?  YEAH, I LIED.  Ralph Fiennes is the sexiest thing ever.  And he's perfect for President Snow, because, guess what:
Who else murders children?  Lord Voldemort.  Who is also very snake like?  Lord Voldemort.  Who likes roses?  Um, LORD VOLDEMORT.  Okay, maybe not, BUT he totally would.  They both have that "we're polite villains" aura of evil thing, which makes them so awesome evil.  If Ralph Fiennes was President Snow, then I would be die all over and then twice more.

Okay I'm not done; because I have one more.  :)  :)

Ceaser Flickman
He is the Ryan Seacrest of the Hunger Games, wearing the same midnight blue suit and stuff.  His hair matches his eyelids which matches his lipstick, which changes each year.  This year, he chooses light blue for his colour.  I present to you, Ceaser Flickman:

Regis Phillman
AND YES, I COLOURED HIM CORRECTLY.  :)  I'm totes computer savvy, whut up.

SO, shall we call it a day?  I'm going to document every moment; especially because my dear beloved has come to an end, but I do have something VERY exciting to discuss next blog entry regarding the boy wizard.

I scarcely recommend Harry Potter books, because I realize the challenge they are to read, and often, it's such a trudge that it's not always enjoyable; people are turned off by the very first chapter, and I totally understand.  When you haven't read it, that first chapter is horrid, and even now it's a hard read for me.  BUT The Hunger Games is for everyone in the entire country and other countries and the world.  The best way I know how to put it is with the simple phrase we all use as a disclaimer when recommending:  you are not prepared.

This Blog Is Now Deemed Prophetic

Tommy is actually hanging out with me in the CMC and he let me take a BIG bite out of a big chocolate muffin he bought.

The fact that I had blogged previously that I wanted to see Tommy in the CMC and it happened, I must say that my blog is therefore deemed Prophetic.  So therefore, you may henceforth call me Seer Rachel because I'm clairvoyant.
